THE POLYVAGAL THEORY
INTRODUCTION MODULE

Discover the basics of Polyvagal Theory with Stephen Porges and Deb Dana

“We come into this world designed to connect. From our first breath, we embark on a lifelong quest to feel safe in our bodies, in our environment, and in our relationships with others. The autonomic nervous system is our personal surveillance system, always on guard, always asking, ‘Am I safe?’ Its purpose is to protect us by assessing safety and risk, by listening moment by moment to what is happening in and around our bodies, and in our connections with others.”

– Deb Dana (from The Beginner’s Guide)

Discover the Polyvagal Theory
with its pioneers

La Polyvagal Theory, developed by neuroscientist Stephen Porges, examines the role of the autonomic nervous system in regulating our physiological and emotional reactions. According to Deb Dana, Polyvagal Theory is “the science of how to feel safe enough to fall in love with life and take the risk of living.”

The autonomic nervous system is our personal surveillance system, constantly vigilant to ensure our safety. It constantly assesses levels of safety and risk, carefully monitoring our bodies, our environment and our social relationships. Its aim is to protect ourselves by staying tuned into what is happening at every moment.

Polyvagal Theory brings us a new understanding of how the autonomic nervous system works, thus providing us with a framework to explore how experience shapes the nervous system and what pathways can lead to healing.

Who is Stephen Porges?

  • Proposed the Polyvagal Theory in 1994
  • University scientist and professor of psychiatry
  • Founding Director of the Post-Traumatic Stress Research Consortium

Stephen W. Porges, Ph.D., is a university scientist distinguished from Indiana University, where he is the founding director of the Post-Traumatic Stress Research Consortium. He's professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina in the United States, and professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Maryland.

In 1994 he proposed the Polyvagal Theory, a theory that links the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system to social behavior and which underlines the importance of physiological state in the expression of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders. This theory leads to innovative treatments based on the understanding of the mechanisms mediating the symptoms observed in several behavioral, psychiatric and physical disorders.

He is the author of Polyvagal Theory: Neurophysiological Foundations of Emotion, Attachment, Communication and Self-Regulation and Our Polyvagal World, co-written with his son Seth Porges (Published in Quantum Way Editions November 12, 2024). He is the creator of a music-based intervention, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), which is currently used by over 1400 therapists to enhance spontaneous social engagement, reduce auditory sensitivities, improve language processing and autonomic nervous system state regulation.

Who is Deb Dana?

  • International expert in Polyvagal Theory
  • Consultant at the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium
  • The first to put Polyvagal Theory into practice in her clinical practice

Deb Dana is a international expert in Polyvagal theory. She is a consultant within the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University in the United States.

Graduate in social psychology, trainer and speaker, Deb Dana is the first to have put the Polyvagal Theory into practice in her clinical practice. She is particularly sensitive to help people who have suffered complex trauma.

To help spread the application of Polyvagal Theory in clinical practice, Deb Dana has developed a Rhythm of Regulation training series, which offers modules ranging from basic to advanced levels. She regularly travels internationally to deliver this training.

Deb Dana has published numerous scientific articles and has been interviewed numerous times on podcasts and radio. She describes the Polyvagal Theory as "the science of feeling safe enough to fall in love with life and take the risk of living it."

She is the author of Anchored: How to Befriend Your Nervous System Using Polyvagal Theory, published by Éditions Quantum Way, and co-author, with Stephen Porges, of Clinical applications of polyvagal theory : the emergence of polyvagal therapies. The following books are to be published in French by Éditions Quantum Way: Polyvagal Flip chart: Understanding the Science of Safety; Polyvagal card deck: 58 Practices for Calm and Change ; Polyvagal Prompts: Finding Connection and Joy through Guided Explorations and The nervous System Workbook: Practical exercises to ease anxiety, find safety, and come home to yourself using polyvagal theory.

A program of the Polyvagale Institute

Le Polyvagal Institute (PVI) is a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Stephen Porges, Deb Dana, Randall Redfield, and Karen Onderko. The institute is dedicated to disseminating the work of Dr. Stephen Porges, creator of the Polyvagal Theory.

“Our mission is to advance communication and connection by building community, facilitating research, improving the quality of care, and providing education on this new understanding of the body-mind system that Polyvagal Theory offers. We believe we can make changes at both the individual and societal levels: as individuals, we improve our communication and become more compassionate because we understand how human connections are formed, and as a society, we can embrace this new paradigm in care and support, whether in hospitals, schools, or at home.”

Quantum Way is the official French-speaking partner of the Polyvagal Institute and offers numerous training courses approved and validated by Dr Stephen Porges.
