THE POLYVAGAL THEORY
Basic module: principles and practice

The organizing principles of Polyvagal Theory
and the practice allowing its daily application

“The nervous system is the common denominator of our human experience. »

Deb Dana (from The Beginner's Guide)

Polyvagal Theory, to make friends with your autonomic nervous system

The autonomic nervous system is our personal surveillance system, constantly vigilant to ensure our safety. It constantly assesses safety and risk levels, carefully monitoring our bodies, our environment and our social relationships. Its purpose is to protect us by staying tuned into what is happening at every moment.

Polyvagal Theory (PVT), developed by neuroscientist Stephen Porges, examines the role of the autonomic nervous system in regulating our physiological and emotional reactions. According to Deb Dana, Polyvagal Theory is the science of how to feel safe enough to fall in love with life and take the risk of living.

In recent years, neuroscience research has fundamentally changed our understanding of the psychological, physiological, emotional, and social impact of trauma, adverse childhood experiences, and chronic stress on individuals.

LEARN HOW TO APPLY POLYVAGAL THEORY IN YOUR LIFE

Polyvagal Theory brings us a new understanding of how the autonomic nervous system works, giving us a different perspective on well-being and a framework for explore how experience shapes the nervous system and what pathways can lead to healing.

This workshop presents the organizational principles of Polyvagal Theory as well as practices allowing its daily application. All teaching modules were recorded with Deb Dana.

This program is a excellent introductory module to POS for any curious person or professional wishing to explore the key principles of Polyvagal Theory and discover how to integrate them into their practice.

The main areas covered by this program are:

  • The three organizing principles of Polyvagal Theory (Neuroception, Hierarchy, Co-regulation),
  • The vagal brake,
  • The social engagement system and basic skills to befriend the nervous system and coach clients to do the same.

Integrate the principles of Polyvagal Theory into your daily life for better emotional regulation and to move towards greater well-being and calm.

With this introductory module, you will:

  • Learn to describe the autonomous hierarchy.
  • Familiarize yourself with the function of the vagus brake.
  • Succeeding in applying a polyvagal vision in everyday life.
  • Understand and describe the co-regulation pathways of the social engagement system.
  • Identify the body's responses, behaviors, emotions, and beliefs for each autonomic state.
  • Understand and be able to discuss the process of neuroception.
  • Create a personal profile map.
  • Listen to stories from different states.
  • Create ventral vagal anchors.
  • Becoming polyvagal-informed.

“She guides us, through simple exercises, to understand our autonomic nervous system and become its friend, engaging its healing abilities to connect us with ourselves and with our social environment.”

Dr. Gabor Maté, author of Addictions, those insatiable ghosts

“An essential module. Proof by experience of Deb's co-regulation which, thanks to her examples and her pedagogy, leads us very quickly to “speak Polyvagal”. We come out of it more grounded, with a desire to share and spread this knowledge around us. Thanks to Quantum Way for giving us access to this, and to Anne-Laure for her gentle and fluid translation!”

Who is Deb Dana?

  • International expert in Polyvagal Theory
  • Consultant at the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium
  • The first to put Polyvagal Theory into practice in her clinical practice

Deb Dana is a international expert in Polyvagal theory. She is a consultant within the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University in the United States.

Graduate in social psychology, trainer and speaker, Deb Dana is the first to have put the Polyvagal Theory into practice in her clinical practice. She is particularly sensitive to help people who have suffered complex trauma.

To help spread the application of Polyvagal Theory in clinical practice, Deb Dana has developed a Rhythm of Regulation training series, which offers modules ranging from basic to advanced levels. She regularly travels internationally to deliver this training.

Deb Dana has published numerous scientific articles and has been interviewed numerous times on podcasts and radio. She describes the Polyvagal Theory as "the science of feeling safe enough to fall in love with life and take the risk of living it."

She is the author of The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy: Engaging the Rhythm of Regulation, Polyvagal Exercises for Safety and Connection, creator of the Polyvagal Flip Chart and co-author, with Stephen Porges, of Clinical Applications of the Polyvagal Theory: The Emergence of Polyvagal-Informed Therapies.

A program of the Polyvagale Institute

Le Polyvagal Institute (PVI) is a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Stephen Porges, Deb Dana, Randall Redfield, and Karen Onderko. The institute is dedicated to disseminating the work of Dr. Stephen Porges, creator of the Polyvagal Theory.

“Our mission is to advance communication and connection by building community, facilitating research, improving the quality of care, and providing education on this new understanding of the body-mind system that Polyvagal Theory offers. We believe we can make changes at both the individual and societal levels: as individuals, we improve our communication and become more compassionate because we understand how human connections are formed, and as a society, we can embrace this new paradigm in care and support, whether in hospitals, schools, or at home.”

Quantum Way is the official French-speaking partner of the Polyvagal Institute and offers numerous training courses approved and validated by Dr Stephen Porges.
