The Polyvagal Model of Bodily Sense

Treating trauma and addictions

With Jan Winhall

"The Felt Sense ou Bodily Sense helps us understand that we have this ability to anesthetize ourselves in order to survive. It helps us understand dissociation phenomena as adaptations and not as pathologies."

Treating Addictions as a Response to Trauma: A New Approach is Needed

  • Do you support traumatized people suffering from addictions?
  • Are you looking for a non-pathologizing approach to addictions and psychological trauma?
  • Want to learn how Polyvagal Theory fits into psychotherapy?

We are faced with more and more people who suffer from one or more addictions (alcohol, drugs, work, shopping, etc.) and psychological trauma (conscious or unconscious) and who ask for help, without always finding it. Our current model, which consists of considering addiction as a brain disease, does not work.

We desperately need of a new approach that treats the trauma of addiction where the trauma lives: in the body.

Trauma and addiction develop separately, but when we treat one, we very often work with the other. Moreover, the state of addiction is traumatic in itself. So how do we work with both?

Jan Winhall discusses the intersection of trauma and addiction and how to approach them with his Polyvagal Model of Bodily Sense
(Felt Sense Polyvagal Model™).

The Polyvagal Model of Body Sense shifts the current pathologizing paradigm in favor of an approach that draws on our inner strength.

According to Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, addiction is considered an adaptive response to stress by our autonomic nervous system. Addictive behaviors are therefore an attempt at emotional regulation of the body that facilitates neurophysiological changes in the nervous system. These behaviors are not the result of illness, but a bodily reaction to threat as a survival mechanism.

Jan Winhall's model integrates Porges' Polyvagal Theory and Eugene Gendlin's Focusing which focuses on our inner feeling, what he calls the Felt Sense ou Bodily SenseThis approach allows us to understand trauma and addictive behaviors as adaptive responses to inappropriate situations.

Learn how the Polyvagal Model of Body Sense can address trauma and addiction to move from a situation of stress, overwhelm or dependency to one of regulation, grounding and calm in their body.
